The England cricket team once again faced grief at the hands of a man whose last name is Tendulkar. This time though, it wasn’t Master Blaster Sachin but his 17-year-old son Arjun who caused some panic in the English camp. According to a report in the Daily Mail, Arjun was practicing with Joe Root and his men at Lord’s as they prepared for the Test series against South Africa when a lethal yorker by the youngster hit Jonny Bairstow flush on his toe.
The wicketkeeper-batsman, who has been a prolific run-scorer for England over the past couple of seasons, required immediate medical attention but was in no danger of missing the first Test that started at the Home of Cricket on Thursday. Sad for Bairstow, though, He couldn’t get some much-needed practice and had to leave the nets after facing just one ball.
Arjun, who has represented the Mumbai Under-14 and 16 sides as a left-arm pacer and batsman, has been consistently honing his skills in the United Kingdom for weeks now.
During the ICC Champions Trophy last month, a section of the Indian media had gathered at the Lord’s cricket ground to watch South Africa’s optional training session. With no Champions Trophy match scheduled at the venue, this was best chance for all the ‘cricket devotees’ to pay a visit to the ‘home of cricket’.
Just as everyone was soaking in the atmosphere, one saw a familiar looking youngster padded up and standing inside the cricket gear shop, adjacent to the nets. The six-foot-plus tall Arjun had come there for a training session, a routine during every English summer for the past few years.
As the scribes hastily started clicking photographs, Arjun’s facial expression was one of amusement bordering on irritation. He quietly walked past the media into the nets, spoke to his coach and then started batting against spinners.
Here is a glimpse of that training session:
