India captain Virat Kohli severely injured his shoulder during Day 1 of the third Test against Australia in Ranchi.
After losing three crucial wickets in the first session on Thursday, skipper Steve Smith got together with middle-order batsman Peter Handscomb to bail his team out of trouble.
During the course of the much-needed partnership, Handscomb danced down the wicket and played a crafty stroke against left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. The ball raced through Ravichandran Ashwin (mid-wicket) and Kohli (mid-on).
With Ashwin refusing to dive and cut the ball, Kohli had to chase it down to the fence in order to save the boundary. And the skipper did exceedingly well to get there on time, dive in full tilt, and save a couple of runs for his side.
But as Kohli leaped forward acrobatically to stop the ball, he fell awkwardly on his right shoulder and caused some damage to it. The feisty cricketer immediately grabbed hold of his sore muscle, even as Ashwin caught up with him and threw the ball back towards the wicket.
Kohli seemed to be in extreme discomfort and was taken off the field promptly. Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane then took over the mantle of leading Team India.
Kohli was yet to return to the field at the time of going in for Tea.
