uchitra Krishnamoorthi says that sister Sujata Kumar’s spirituality reflected even in her career decisions – English Vinglish actress Sujata Kumar passed away at the age of 53 on August 19 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Sujata’s sister and actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi remembered her and said that she was a compassionate soul and helped everyone who needed her.
Suchitra earlier on August 19 declared that her beloved sister is no more, while on August 20 she took to her Facebook and announced her cremation.
An emotional Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa actress quoted Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet and wrote a message which read, “For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountaintop, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shal claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.”
For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?And what is it to cease breathing but to…
When asked about what her sister was like, Suchitra told Mumbai Mirror, “She touched many lives with her vivacity and generosity. She was spiritual and had the tenacity of an unrelenting warrior. She was emancipated even before people knew the meaning of women’s liberation and lived life on her own terms till the end.”
And what kind of a relation did they share?
“My sister practically raised me and was my best friend. She loved unconditionally and gave so much to everyone in her orbit that she would often run out of energy herself. But I never imagined that she would one day no longer be a part of my life; its unbearable to even think about. Over the years, I took her goodness for granted but like she would tell me, “Be bindaas,” I was just that. I will miss her quiet wisdom as much as her raucous laughter,” the actress added.
Suchitra Krishnamoorthi also went on to say that Sujata’s spirituality reflected even in her career decisions.
“She took up acting after being married for 12 years, not because she craved fame — she never cared about that, and in fact, she had always shied away from the limelight. She did it on a whim, to reclaim her freedom. But sometimes, she would get so bored with her acting jobs that she would call up her directors and tell them to kill off her character. ‘Mere charactor ko haar daalke photo lagado’,” Suchitra told the daily.
Sujata Kumar aka Suzie, as her family and close friends address her as, apart from being a wonderful actress, was a trained hypnotherapist and an alternate healer as well.
“For me, she was my Suzie Puzie. I will miss her forever,” Suchitra further added.
Apart from starring in English Vinglish, Sujata Kumar also acted in Raanjhanaa and Guzaarish. She also featured in Anil Kapoor’s thriller TV show 24.
