arva Chauth is a one-day festival celebrated every year by married Hindu women where they keep fast for the safety and longevity of their husbands. This year, the festival of love will be celebrated on October 27th i.e. Saturday.
On this day, the women observe a nirjala vrat (fast without food and water) from sunrise to moonrise. They break the fastonly after offering prayers to the moon. Married women look at the moon through a sieve as part of a ritual to break their fast.
Another important element of the event is dressing up. Women traditionally prefer to wear red clothes on the day and do the 16 shringaar – which includes bangles, vermilion, lipstick, henna among other things.
