to her travel look with a colour-blocked Gucci bamboo handbag
She’s layered her Gucci PJ set with a chic trench-coat, worn a structured bolero over a crisp white shirt and has shown a penchant for lace-up booties and knee-length boots at her numerous airport outings. From a voluminous topcoat to a fringed jacket to a leather biker number to a slip-inspired Noir look —
Deepika Padukone’s airport style evolution is a cross-pollinated collage of diverse ideas and influences. Rocker chic, boho hipster, biker babe, First Lady and magazine editor — all these phrases come to mind when one sits down to dissect and decode each of her travel looks. She loves her statement-making Gucci and Celine totes and has transmogrified layering into a fine craft. Let’s speak to designers and stylists on how they observe her voyage sartorial metamorphosis.
Functionality is the core
Designer Arpita Mehta feels that unlike other B-Town celebs, who don’t look that comfortable sporting dressy looks, this grown-up airport style is totally up Miss Padukone’s alley. “Functionality seems to be an important aspect in her travel looks — be it her boots or statement bags. Besides, her make-up is low-key and never out there,” she says.
Stylist Divyak D’Souza seconds that, “Functionality is key when it comes to travel and Deepika’s focus on the utility aspect works in her favour. Her oversized looks are totally on point for airports and she layers it in such a way so that she can easily tweak it depending on the air conditioning blast at the lounge or on flights. There’s certainly a lot to learn from her.”
Rocker chick vibe
Designer Payal Singhal opines that Deepika can carry off just any look under the sun as she’s got a great height and a phenomenal body. “The very thought of boots in Mumbai makes people cringe, but she makes them work so effortlessly. Also, her play on layering helps make a rather casual look more formal and polished,” says she.
Controls volume like a pro
Designer Aniket Satam notices that she’s nailed the art of rocking oversized ensembles. “It’s tricky to control volume but since she’s tall and skinny, it works well in her favour. Having said that, I’d like to add that the overall vibe is pleasantly laid-back and never forced.
It could be a basic shirt-dress or her clever coquetry with exaggerated overcoats,” he says. Satam recalls one of travel looks at VMA when she sported a patch-worked and multi-patterned Balenciaga. “Mixing runway and high street pieces with same panache works in her favour,” he adds.
Emmanuelle Alt zone
Designer Nimish Shah calls her airport sartorial evolution as the modern power dressing. “I see a power play there. She’s India’s answer to French Vogue editor Emmanuelle Alt,” says he.
Designer Amy Billimoria seconds that. “She’s portraying today’s contemporary, strong woman who marries high fashion with comfort and panache.”
Kudos to her stylist
Designer Swapnil Shinde asserts that Deepika and her stylist Shaleena Nathani are a match made in heaven. “Her airport looks are always relaxed and never overpowering. Be it her ’60s inspired fringed jackets, calf skin boots, ’70s inspired minis or ’90s inspired grunge jackets,” observes Shinde.
Stylist Eshaa Amiin observes that her looks are quite well put together. “Padukone uses interesting basics, which can be styled in multiple ways. In all her ensembles, there’s one statement-making element be it a jacket or a cape,” says she.
