B-Town’s travel ‘it’ bag – After Hrs quizzes fashionistas on season’s chicest voyage accessory

Goyard, Hermes, Chanel, Gucci, YSL, Dolce & Gabbana and Issey Miyake — have been our B-Town girls’ preferred labels, when it comes to travel style. While Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sridevi Kapoor have showed a loyalty for the classic Hermes Birkin, Deepika Padukone loves her Chanel and Gucci totes.
The Gucci Dionysus bag and the floral backpack from the Italian label have single-handedly managed to eclipse every other travel handbag in the last few seasons. We ask our style arbiters to zero in on the coolest travel buys of the season.
Backpack spells comfort
Designer Arpita Mehta feels that the backpack is always comfortable. She says, “Tote is very inconvenient. Recently, I saw the Dolce and Gabbana polar bear backpack on a fashion blog and loved it. I see a lot of actresses carrying backpacks, but somehow it comes across as very planned, thought-out piece and doesn’t easily flow into the ensemble.” Mehta emphasises that key is to be effortless.
Designer Rashmi Modi, too, roots for the now-trending backpack as it’s versatile and functional. “When it comes to security checking, everything becomes messy so the backpack gives you an edge rather than a general day bag,” says she.
Rashmi observes that a backpack injects a street credo to an ensemble. “I like Mansur Gavriel, which is clean and simple,” says she.
Issey Miyake Bao Bao
Designer Payal Singhal seconds that backpacks have made a huge comeback. “All the brands are doing it. For me, currently I’m loving Givenchy and Fendi. I like to go against the trend. If everyone carries it, I’d rather not. Having said that the Issey Miyake Bao Bao is super light and functional,” she shares. Payal’s current obsession is the Fendi scalloped handbag.
Bored of Birkin
On one’s travels it’s not hard to sport a blizzard of Birkins at airport lounges. Designer Pria Kataaria Puri shares, “When I travel abroad, I tend to see a lot of people carrying Birkins. However, I’m bored of it at the moment. Of late, I’m gravitating towards the backpacks from Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana.” Currently, Pria is in love with Chanel’s fringed backpack.
Hermes is classic
Hermes may have lost their charm, but one can’t dispute their classic and timeless appeal. Designer Surily Goel says, “The tote was definitely big at some point, but the backpack is hands-free. Having said that, I’d like to add that Goyard and Hermes are classic and always make a point.” Perhaps that explains why women continue to fall for the charm of the Birkin and Kelly totes hook, line and sinker.
Designer Sonali Pamnani of label The Meraki Project votes in favour of the Chanel tote. “Everyone is carrying it and it doesn’t take away from the garment which is the best part. It’s understated and practical at the same time.” Sonali doesn’t see Birkin as practical.
